Il castello
The ancient structure was created as a strategic fortress during the roman age. According to the tales of that period, in 529 when Saint Benedetto undertook the journey towards Montecassino to found his Order, he went through this valley and in the "castrum Turris pervenit”.
Between 900 and 1100 the castle belonged to the powerful roman family of Senatore Teofilatto, who together with Pope Giovanni XII and the Counts of Tuscolo had large interests in all the territory.
At the end of XIII century, the Caetani family held the Castle as a feudal estate. The purchase was ordered and ratified by Pope Caetani Bonifacio VIII, with the "Circumspecta Sedis” bull on the 10th of February 1303.
Bonifacio VIII, who proclaimed, in 1300, the first Jubileee in the history, used the Castle as a place of meditation and work. From there he issued the papal Bulls, carrying the "Datum in Turri nostra prope in Anagnium”.
During the following centuries the Caetani family enlarged and fortified the Castle, providing for the construnction of external walls, ditches, drawbridges, and several defensive towers.
in 1915 an earthquake damaged the Castle and it was restored later on by the roman Teofilatto family, which is the present owner. Since 1987 the Castle has been the see of the "Domus Theophylacti Opus” which is the center of Medieval Studies and Culture.
